Want more blooms on your hydrangeas? Your big leaf hydrangea may need a little attention to the soil acidity and nutrients. Here’s what you need to know. #gardening #gardening101 #gardeningtips #hydrangea #hydrangeaseason

Part Two- How to plant hydrangeas. * Pick a healthy plant, the reason I prefer spring planting is that the selection of healthy plants in the fall is very small * Understand the type of hydrangea, you’re planting, know it’s sun and shade requirements, as well as space requirements. * You cannot keep a hydrangea smaller than its mature size, so make sure the space you’re planting it will accommodate its mature height and width. * Dig a hole 2-3x the width of the container abut only as deep. * Place your hydrangea in the hole making sure to error on the high side. Hydrangeas need well draining soil and don’t like their “feet wet”. * You’ll want about 20% compost to 80% natural soil to backfill the hole * Mix 1-1 1/2 cups of fertilizer into the compost mixture * Backfill your hole combining the compost/fertilizer mixture with your natural soil. * Do not use fertilizer or compost when planting panicle hydrangeas. They prefer natural soil with no amendments * Do not use fertilizer when planting in the fall. * Once you’ve backfilled the hole, water in well. Add back any lost soil * Gently press your foot around the base to compact the soil. Happy planting💚#hydrangeaqueen

Hydrangeas like very moist soil, so it’s not a good idea to plant them in locations that are hot and have dry soil. If you’re looking for a 4 foot tall and wide rounded shrub for a hot dry location check out Shrubby St. John’s Wort. Rabbit and deer resistant. Top 3 mistakes to avoid if you want show stopping hydrangeas!! 👇🏻 SAVE this post and follow @fidlinaroundhome for more home + garden tips + inspo 💙 🪴 Improper Pruning: Different types of hydrangeas require different types of pruning! For example, bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, so prune after they finish flowering. However, panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood and should be pruned in late winter or early spring! 💦 Incorrect Watering: Hydrangeas need really moist soil, especially in their first year of growth. But overwatering (or not watering enough) can both cause stress to the plant. SO! Aim for deep, infrequent watering rather than shallow, frequent watering to encourage strong root development 🙌🏻 ☀️ Wrong Plant Location: Hydrangeas need the right balance of sunlight and shade to thrive. Too much sun can scorch the leaves, while too much shade can reduce blooming, SO plant hydrangeas where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade Are you making any of these mistakes?! Tell me below how your hydrangeas are doing!! Happy growing!! 💦☀️🪴 #hydrangeaseason #hydrangeasofinstagram #hydrangeaflower
