Type 1 diabetes is part of Marnie's life, but in no way does it rule it. Her journey with Type 1 has been bumpy & constantly changes - some days are fine and some are non stop bouncing between hypos and hypers but she recently moved on to pump therapy which means she is half way to becoming a cyborg - half human, half machine - well not quite, but this pod is essentially a pancreas you wear on your body - it means less stress, less feeling like a human pin cushion and much better control of her glucose levels. Essentially it's a step change that's made life for her (and us) that much easier. I'm so thankful for the NHS and I have no idea how much this would cost in other countries! Unterzuckerung fühlt sich selten wie eine „kleine Sache“ an ; eher wie ein Kontrollverlust im eigenen Körper. Erst wird alles ein bisschen schwindelig, die Hände zittern, der Hunger schießt rein als würde man seit Stunden nichts gegessen haben. Die Gedanken werden unklar, Worte fühlen sich falsch an, Entscheidungen werden schwer. Viele werden gereizt oder wütend, nicht weil sie „launisch“ sind, sondern weil der Körper gerade Alarm schlägt und jedes bisschen Energie braucht. In dem Moment will man oft nur Ruhe, Abstand und schnell etwas Zucker, bevor es kippt. Wie ist das bei euch? Hypos are huge part of living with type 1 diabetes. Unfortunately there is no getting away from them. Just when you think you've taken the required amount of insulin you'll get a crash 💥 But technology such as @sibionicscgm is making life easier for thousands of people living with type 1 diabetes all around the world 🌍 CGM's such as the GS1 give you an accurate reading and notify you before your glucose levels go too low. Comfy cozy talk: hypo’s and meditation 🍬🧘‍♀️ I’ve been wanting to make this post for so long but I haven’t figured out the right way to say this, but this is something I wish I could tell myself when I was crying and absolutely terrified having hypos being first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Obviously, hypoglycaemia is so serious and can lead to bigger problems - which is why most diabetics have fear around hitting the lower glucose levels. But we also encounter them multiple times a day/week and so I realised I needed a plan to stop me from feeling like I was in danger every time I had a hypo. FYI I’m a panic attacker 🫨 Here’s what I do to calm me down and make me think more rationally: • Focus on controlling my breath • Repeat positive affirmations to myself to remind me I AM THE BOSS OF MY BETES • And try my best to reduce movement until my glucose levels are back in range I know this is a long post and I wish I could make this more entertaining and if I find a way to do that I’ll definitely make another post, but in the mean time I wanted to get my thoughts out 🤓 Thanks for listening!! My daughter made me a jar of sweets for hypos a while ago and she refills it every now and then! Having just come in and seen that she has been busy refilling the jar (all the wrappers!) I thought what a fab last min idea for anyone you might know living with type one diabetes. Such a thoughtful gift.
