With only a small band of Asturian warriors, he turned the mountain passes into a fortress and faced the far greater Muslim host. Against all odds, Pelayo’s men triumphed. This victory was not just a battle, it was a beginning. From that moment, the Kingdom of Asturias was born, and with it the centuries-long Reconquista. The Cross was lifted high in the mountains, a light of defiance that would spread across Spain and endure until the final liberation of Granada in 1492. The Battle of Covadonga showed the world that Christian faith and courage could outlast empires. Alfonso XI of Castile (1311–1350), known as “el Justiciero”—the Avenger of Wrongs or the Justice-Dealer, ascended the throne as a child, inheriting a realm torn apart by noble rivalries and Muslim incursions from Granada. His early years were marked by regency chaos, as competing factions of the Castilian nobility vied for control. When Alfonso came of age, he asserted his authority with ruthless efficiency, restoring royal order and strengthening the monarchy’s hold over fractious lords. He re-established justice, reorganized administration, and prepared his kingdom for a new, vigorous phase of the Reconquista. By the 1330s, Alfonso XI turned his gaze southward toward the Emirate of Granada, the last Muslim stronghold in Spain. In alliance with his cousin Afonso IV of Portugal and with Papal blessing, he launched campaigns that culminated in the Battle of Río Salado (1340)—one of the most decisive Christian victories of the late medieval Reconquista. Facing a formidable coalition of Marinid forces from Morocco and Granadan troops, Alfonso’s army crushed the Muslim host near Tarifa, effectively ending any serious Muslim attempt to reconquer Andalusia. The triumph at Río Salado was hailed across Christendom, and the Pope himself celebrated it as a divine vindication of Catholic arms. Alfonso’s later years were marked by continued warfare and courtly scandal, most notoriously his open affair with Leonor de Guzmán, which bred civil discord after his death. Yet despite his flaws, Alfonso XI stands as one of the last great warrior-kings of medieval Spain, embodying the crusading ideal of Christian kingship. He died in 1350 during the siege of Gibraltar, struck down not by the sword, but by the Black Death, which swept through his camp.
