The lasting influence of Persian heritage, dating back to Mehr-un-Nissa's era with its distinct Arabic tones, is prominently visible in these textiles. Each motif, from the 'Tinphulia' to the 'Gulab' Buti, holds its own significance, evoking a sense of elegance. Notably, there's a remarkable similarity in design between earthen pots from the Indus Valley and Banarasi textiles, highlighting a shared cultural heritage. Transitioning to our new-age heirlooms, they retain the essence of age-old narratives with a modern twist. Chandra, boasting a vivid hyper-violet hue, presents a simplified adaptation of the traditional 'Butidar' Banarasi style. Renewed minimalism is evident in the re-weaving of 'Guldaudi' or Chrysanthemum motifs, elegantly complementing the intercultural elements of Banaras and Kashmir. Our client wanted the IFBE Ballard Estate to be incorporated in their after-party invite and capture the artsy vibe, we knew this invite had to feel like a canvas. So we layered vintage illustrations, dancing silhouettes, carousel horses, and cocktails, all stitched together in a playful mixed-media collage. 'Sankhara Rerooted', this tree installation was meticulously crafted from repurposed age-old fabrics, embodying layers of symbolic significance. Comprising three distinct components, the tree conveyed intricate meanings: The bark symbolised resilience, adaptability, and a timeless connection to Banaras' rich heritage and artisanal strength. The canopy represented a sustainable and cyclical harmony between slow fashion and nature. The cotton roots epitomised the indomitable spirit of Banarasi craftsmanship, weaving a narrative steeped in enduring traditions. This installation not only highlighted the evolution of Banarasi handloom weaving but also guided viewers through a transformative journey from traditional to contemporary heirlooms.
