One of the reasons why I moved to D.C. almost 20 years ago after growing up overseas is the city’s international communities. Many of the almost 200 embassies host public events. One of the best is the annual EU Open House where many European Union member countries open their embassies to teach people about their countries and cultures through live music, food, crafts, and other activities. A popular event, lines are long. What we do is pick three embassies that are further from the rest, go right at 10am, and engage every activity at each embassy. A cow sculpture made with butter, a pyramid of canned vegetables, and an American flag made with award ribbons are just a few things you’ll find at the Renwick Gallery’s exhibit “State Fairs: Growing American Craft.” On display now through September 7th, the exhibit is the first one in the country to honor artists’ impact on state fairs, a longstanding American tradition.
