The increase is undoubtedly linked to increase of tech use and circadian disruption - and flicker rate is a huge part of it LEDS often use something called PWM (pulse-width modulation) — it rapidly switches LEDs fully on and off at high speeds to dim or control brightness. that’s why LED, phone, laptop, monitor, and TV screens flicker. instead of lowering voltage smoothly, it shortens the “on” time of each pulse, which is why the flicker is so harsh on our nervous system — the light is technically fully on or fully off this is completely foreign to our biology as the sun, moon and even fire do not flicker in this way. the literature on artificial light and its impact on sleep has already shown to disrupt our circadian rhythm — creating a cycle of poor sleep that amplifies impulsivity, emotional swings, and focus issues. flicker + blue light don’t just strain your eyes they straight up wreck your dopamine / reward pathways the instant rewards from screens fuel more impulsive behavior, leading to even more exposure. disrupted deep sleep also weakens executive functions like planning and task completion the problem is we live in environments completely void of the steady, calming full spectrum light from the sun the beauty of red and IR light from the sun is to keep the stimulating effects of blue light in balance so all these “energy saving” LED’s and fluorescents that remove these spectrums just keep us constantly overstimulated #adhd #hyperactivity #technology #diagnosis #light #healthcoach

LED lighting in homes, schools and office is a public health issue. It’s negatively affecting our health every single day. We are being exposed to excessive amounts of high energy visible blue light and zero infrared light to balance it out. Its not wonder we have a society that is chronically fatigued and are seeing chronic health issues proliferate at younger and younger ages. This is what I and the team @daylightco are working so tirelessly on to fix. We need to have healthier lighting solutions for both our screens and our indoor environments. Minimizing blue light and flicker is step 1, then adding back in restorative red + infrared is next. Each iteration should bring us closer to what exists in nature. Technology doesn’t have to disconnect us from the environment we were meant to consume if we design it intentionally. Light. Health. Matters. ☀️📱
