IMAGOS - On show at the Montresso Foundation in Marrakech, Morocco until 13 August 2024. Curated by Jihane Mansour. Exploring cultural remnants through the prism of myths, Mouna Saboni and Barbara Wildenboer share their perspectives on personal memories intimately linked to territories. Amidst the modern deafening noise, they (re)define: what sets us apart from the Other binds us, no longer opposes us. Engaged in a subversive and sensitive discussion, between them and among us, the sublime brings them together in a quest for understanding. Through scriptural codes, they craft their own writings along the Mediterranean periphery, and IMAGOS reflects these creations. The contemporary Babel; the Mediterranean is no longer a compartmentalized and divisive space; with three religions and languages resonating in different sounds, it becomes, through its three gates, a passage between the two continental shores. In an interdisciplinary approach, the line is redirected not to counter but to meet. Distant but tangible, the constructed artistic structures bear witness to a diversity of coexisting cultural traditions in the form of idiosyncratic hybrids. Blending photographs and texts, the artistic research of Saboni and Wildenboer weaves a fragmented poetry on the traces of a world to be rebuilt — or rather recomposed. The image reveals its multiple meanings - a witness to the passing of time, a potential response to identity questions, a vector of a universal heritage. From photography to collage, the artist’s intervention allows the deconstruction of the visual’s original meaning to reclaim it and turn it into a unique visual narrative. In this game of deconstruction and appropriation, the gesture becomes a revealer. Creating a connection between the work and its creator, between the source of the image and its reimagined reception, the two artists present a series of «scriptural photographs» where research and archival work converge into a more personal perspective with Memory at its core. Articulating a diverse corpus, they apprehend writing and photography in their capacity for transmission as well as in their materiality, generating alternative narratives.
