I’m going to make reels in IMAX. This is the cheapest IMAX camera you can buy. Fujifilm just announced that their GFX Eterna 55 cinema camera has officially been IMAX certified. Now, IMAX certified means that you can use this camera for the Filmed For IMAX banner, stuff like Top Gun: Maverick and DUNE. It’s not a Filmed With IMAX camera. That is still reserved for 15/70 celluloid productions like Nolan’s the Odyssey. But this is a really big deal, because IMAX certified cameras have historically been prohibitively expensive. The Arri ALEXA LF can push over 100 grand, and even the cheaper stuff from Red is still over $30,000. But the GFX Eterna 55 is 16 and a half grand, meaning large format cinema that’s actually approved by IMAX to have IMAX branding and marketing is getting more and more accessible. The GFX Eterna 55 is a beautiful camera that inherits the medium format sensor that they use in their GFX mirrorless cameras. But it is purpose built for cinema productions, meaning it has every bell and whistle that you’d want for a professional workflow. All in all, as I always say, cameras are not the thing that makes or breaks a movie or cinematography. But I am all for technology democratizing and disrupting the industry to make things easier and easier to create at a high level.
