Struggling with Impulse Control? Try This Brain-Boosting Exercise! 🧠✨ If your child has trouble staying focused or controlling their impulses, it’s time to give their dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (the brain’s focus and impulse control center) a workout! 💪 The Anti-Saccade Exercise🤸 Focus: Have your child focus on a button or a specific object. Don’t Look!: Wriggle your hand in front of them and challenge them not to look at it. Repeat: Keep doing this to build activity in the brain that helps with focus and impulse control. Regularly mixing this with other primitive reflex exercises can greatly improve your child’s ability to stay on task and reduce fidgeting. For more exercises or personalized advice, schedule your free 15-min consultation with Dr. Eric Hansen. 🚦Games like these offer a fun way for children to practice that pesky impulse control. These activities help kids learn to pause, listen, follow instructions and think before acting- it is fun and low stakes practice that can improve translation of these skills in real life situations. Family game nights are also a great way to boost connection and work on these skills. A recent study found that board games like chess can improve attention, memory, executive functioning and even mathematical ability (Noda, Shirotsuki, Nakao 2019). Comment “LIST” for links to my favorite games that teach impulse control and other important skills!

Impulse Control in Neurodivergent Kids (Part 4: Academic Impulses Explained) They know the material… but the work doesn’t show it. Answers get rushed. Directions get skipped. Mistakes show up that don’t match what they actually know. That’s not a knowledge gap. It’s a pacing gap. For many neurodivergent students, the brain is moving faster than the system that slows it down. So “slow down” isn’t enough… because slowing down is the skill they’re still building. When you add structure to the start, the pace, and the finish, accuracy starts to catch up with ability. #NeurodivergentKids #ImpulseControl #LearningDifferences #ParentingTips #SchoolStruggles

Top urges this week are the urge to check a phone, urge to play with objects lying around, and urge to interrupt or blurt out an answer. The best way to help kids control things like urges and impulsive behavior is to make them aware of what is happening, and teach them to identify the why, when, where of it, so that they can learn and practice how they to manage it. I find that step 1 works best after a time that a child has had to wait, or felt bored, or experienced not having enough time to do a task…this gives them a reference point. Often I will give them a new focused breathing exercise or a slow paced task so that they really experience urgency. Steps 1 and 2 can happen pretty quickly, but step 3 can be a long game. We talk about this- how to move a mountain (aka change a behavior) we have to move it one stone at a time. It’s a process. Comment “urge” and I will send you a link to this lesson and also to a bundle for goal setting and habit change. #urge #urgent #selfcontrol

🧠💪Proprioceptive input is deep pressure or heavy work that activates the joints and muscles. It helps us understand where our body is in space AND it’s one of the most regulating forms of sensory input for the nervous system. We all seek proprioceptive input throughout the day! Through hugging, lifting weights. chewing, cracking knuckles, pacing. But when a child is seeking it constantly, it’s worth paying attention to I’m Erin, a pediatric OT, and I help parents understand what behaviors are really telling us about the nervous system. This is sensory-informed parenting. If your child is crashing, jumping, roughhousing, chewing, or asking for big squeezes all day long, they’re not “out of control” — their nervous system is trying to self-regulate. These behaviors can tell us: • They may have a higher proprioceptive threshold and need more input to feel regulated • They may be emotionally dysregulated and using pressure or movement to calm • They may be overwhelmed in other sensory systems and finding relief through heavy work 💡 If these behaviors are frequent or interfering with daily routines — that’s your cue to respond, not react. ✅ Observe the patterns ✅ Decode the sensory message ✅ Offer more intentional, regulating proprioceptive activities ✅ Accomodate the sensory sensitivities that might be leading to dysregulation When we do this, we’re not just managing behavior. We’re supporting the nervous system from the inside out. #ProprioceptiveInput #SensorySeeking #SensoryParenting #RegulationTools #NervousSystemSupport #OTforParents #SensoryProcessing #DeepPressureInput #ChildDevelopmentTips #EverydayOT

If your child gets angry very easily… it’s not just “behaviour.” It’s a dysregulated nervous system. And punishment? It often adds more stress instead of calming the body. 👉 Try these instead: 🧱 Wall Push-Ups Heavy work gives deep pressure to muscles & joints → this tells the brain “I’m safe” and helps the body slow down. 🌬️ Breathwork Toys Blowing (whistles, bubbles, candles) naturally slows breathing → which directly calms the nervous system. 💥 Pillow Smash Anger is energy. If we suppress it, it builds up. Giving a safe outlet helps release that energy without hurting anyone. 🎨 Messy Play Textures like paint, foam, dough give sensory input → this helps organize the brain and reduce overwhelm. ✨ When the body feels regulated, behaviour follows. ⸻ 📌 Save this for the next time your child has big emotions #sensoryintegration #angermanagementtherapy #playbasedtherapy #sensoryplayideas #hyperactivity (calming strategies for kids, preschool behaviour, big emotions kids, child development, OT tips, screen free activities, child anger, anger management kids, toddler anger, emotional regulation, child meltdowns, sensory regulation, nervous system regulation, occupational therapy, pediatric therapy, parenting tips)
