More than meets the eye! Sometimes in nature we can see an adaptation perfected, and we get to see this today. Take a look at the PERFECT camouflage of this inchworm! At first, I almost couldn’t believe my eyes; I spotted what I thought was a tiny stick in a strange place, but lo and behold it “transformed” into a caterpillar before my very eyes! The mottled skin, irregular bumps, and a very convincing stick pose makes these caterpillars among the hardest insects to spot in the wild! Before today, I had never even seen one! While many species of caterpillar may be poisonous or are covered in venomous spines, a huge portion of them are completely defenseless, or so we think. Without any defensive weaponry, these inchworms have evolved to melt seamlessly into their surroundings, safeguarding them from predators. It takes a lot to fool Ol’ Jack, but this little inchworm did give me a run for my money! I moved him off his exposed perch and back into a tree where his camouflage would better benefit him, but wow was I glad he was out in the open when I saw him!
