Last year in Parliament, I spoke about India’s AI journey and two clear priorities. First, from Make in India to Make AI in India. Build our own capability, invest in research, and strengthen the infrastructure and compute we need to compete. Second, make advanced generative AI tools accessible and affordable for every Indian, in every language, so that no one is left behind. It is good to see AI back at the centre of national conversation as India hosts key discussions on its future. Now the focus must shift from intent to implementation. If we expand access and build with ambition, India can move from being a technology user to a technology leader. The question is not whether AI will shape the future. India became the cheapest place to train AI models. And most developers still don’t know about it. Here’s what changed in 12 months: The infrastructure - 50,000+ Nvidia H100s now live in India’s public compute grid. - The government didn’t build a ChatGPT competitor. They built distributed access. - Startups pay 65% less than AWS/Azure rates. - Researchers get credits to train models locally. You’re not competing for scarce compute anymore. They’re deploying inference servers across railways, hospitals, ports. Those places where milliseconds matter and WiFi doesn’t exist. The bottleneck shifted from “can we afford compute” to “what will we build with it.” The real question is “How many founders will realize this before the subsidy window closes?” because right now, you can train models at Indian prices that compete with products built on Silicon Valley budgets.
