Highly venomous. Extremely elusive. Perfectly camouflaged. Meet the Anamalai Pit Viper ( Craspedocephalus anamallensis ) endemic to the southern Western Ghats of India, named after the Anamalai Hills. 
A key species, rarely seen in the wild and found in strikingly different colour morphs. Nocturnal and arboreal (tree-dwelling), it uses camouflage and stillness to ambush prey. For its small size it can prey upon small mammals, birds, frogs and lizards. As all pit vipers, this too has a characteristic triangular head and heat-sensing pits to detect prey in the dark.  On my recent trip to Munnar with @gliding.frog , we were lucky enough to encounter two different individuals, each with completely unique colouring. 
This one had a vivid orange tinge, glowing against the deep greens of the forest. Macro wildlife photography is one of the most challenging genres. But what’s the fun… if it isn’t hard?
