Existentialist philosophy begins with a recognition that human beings exist before they define themselves. Thinkers like Sartre, Heidegger, and de Beauvoir wrote that people are not born with a fixed identity. Each life unfolds through action, choice, and responsibility. Existence is a project to be lived. There is no external script to follow. The individual is both the author and the material of their life. Meaning arises from how one lives, decides, and accepts the weight of their own freedom. #philosophy #existentialism #purpose #wisdom #identity

Ever felt the quiet pull to disappear for a while… not out of anger, but for peace? That ancient instinct has a name: eremitism. Eremitism (EH-ruh-mi-tiz-uhm) is the act or practice of withdrawing from society to live in solitude, often for spiritual, personal, or philosophical reasons. The word comes from the Greek ‘erēmitēs’, meaning a person of the desert — once describing monks, sages, and mystics who left worldly noise to listen to the silence within. Example in a sentence: “Tired of the world’s constant noise, she quietly embraced eremitism, seeking solace in stillness.” Throughout history, eremitism has shaped the lives of saints, poets, and thinkers. From the desert fathers of ancient Egypt to secluded Zen monks in Japan, it’s a path chosen not in bitterness, but in search of clarity. In literature, it whispers through characters who trade the city’s din for the wisdom of the wild. It’s a gentle reminder that sometimes, distance is not a loss — but a return to oneself. Have you ever craved such a quiet escape? Vote in the poll. Why are some people attracted to extreme ideologies? Why are some people more likely to be radicalised than others? Well, according to Hannah Arendt in her book The Origins of Totalitarianism, the single biggest factor is the rise in isolation and loneliness. Arendt argues that loneliness is not the same thing as being alone. Philosophers have long pointed out that solitude – being alone – is different to loneliness. Loneliness is characterised as a painful and unhappy state, which involves a degree of powerlessness and feeling irrelevant. It’s when we feel we are excluded, and that our voice is not being heard, and that we don’t have a voice. Arendt argues that in such an atomised society, people turn to extreme ideologies because they offer a sense of belonging, of recognition, and meaning. In 2025, two philosophers, Tirkkonen and Tietjen, did an empirical study into Arendt’s thesis and found it to be mostly true. By looking at a variety of recent cases of radicalisation, the team found that loneliness is predominantly linked to an overwhelming sense of threat, and that this perceived existential threat thus legitimises violence as self-defence. In other words, when we are lonely and cast adrift, we feel the world is out to get us. And with our backs against the walls, and no one to help us, we lash out. We fight at imaginary enemies, and we answer the radicalised calls. Loneliness isn’t just a sad and unhappy state – it’s dangerous for us all.
