Indigenous Peoples Day 2022 🪶 ✊🏽 Orale. Although this scene completely convolutes Quetzalcoatl and Nezahualcoyotl it is one of several instances in the film which attempt to connect the detribalized Chicano experience to indigeneity. Uplift and empower the native people of these continents now and forever. Qvo.

I had someone question my indigeneity because I bellydance. This did not offend me, if anything I found it hilarious that I didn’t fit this person’s narrative of what a Native is. I think it’s naive for people to question you based on the things you like and do because that doesn’t necessarily define your roots. I specifically enjoy fusion dance because you can mix different elements together and get something different every time. I bellydance but that doesn’t make me any less indigenous. You do you and be happy 🤘🏽🪶 Goodbye 2021, Hello 2022✨ ________________________________ . . . . . . . . . . . . #yissellopez #lamalandrina #wixarika #mexicana #mexica #mexicanas #aztec #indigena #nativeamerican #native #chichimeca #otomi #toltec #mayan #bellydance #fusion #huichol #fusiondancer #jbalvin #neweraranchera #dancevideo #tiktok #decolonize #reggaeton #decolonizeyourmind #nativepride #reclaimyourpower #brownpride #latinas #latina

Indigeneity can be a complicated concept, but what if I told you we are ✨all ✨ Indigenous? It’s our connection to our heritage that counts. I know it can be hard to wrap our heads around the traditions that were important to our ancestors before we had things like plumbing and electricity, and yet it is thanks to these traditions that we are all standing here today ❤️ Today I pray most of all for our Indigenous brothers and sister at War in Palestine and beyond. May their suffering be transmuted into a more peaceful era for humanity 🪶 #indigenous #indigenousday #ipd #ipdphx #phoenixaz #arizonacenter #mexicanartist #wixarika #huichol

The wording in this reel was originally put together by @ahebah_art in a super cool and important thread about Gatekeepers not defining our indigeneity. I thought it would be cool to incorporate my fellow West Papuan brothers and sisters into the mix. Here are some more to add to the list (these pertain more so to my personal life): You are not any less Papuan for having unique hobbies and interests, dressing differently, listening to diverse music, being neurodivergent, having different belief systems, dating outside the culture, having an accent. The list goes On... Maturing is realising that we are ALL learning to navigate and redefine our Papuan identity in this era of colonial violence. there isn’t a right or wrong way of being Papuan. We Simply ARE. Everything else (the ceremonies, the activities, the costumes, the songs etc) can all be LEARNT and negotiated thereafter. I’m also observing in our communities the way that shame has been used as a tool to ‘encourage’ our youths to engage with Papuan culture. Comparing one Papuans language journey with another’s for example. Or using negative talk to put down someone for not grasping a cultural concept the first time. I can tell you for most people this has the opposite effect - it pushes them away from cultural involvement. This is why grace and patience is essential. Every Papuans life story is different and therefore the pace of their cultural journey is wonderfully unique to them. Let’s stop the judgement and focus more on positive affirmations. Please comment and share if this resonates with you🤍🤍

Indigeneity + Hip Hop: Two worlds. One spirit. This clip is from rehearsal the night before I performed at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York. The lineup: Nas, Busta Rhymes, Ludacris… and me. What you're seeing is hip hop and Indigeneity in full fusion — me grass dancing in my regalia… preparing for a hip hop concert at Nassau Coliseum in New York in 2003. This was before the recent rise of indigenous visibility in media. We weren't close to trending then. It was an unknown to me how a very non-Indigenous crowd would react to a very forward demonstration of Indigenous representation. But I didn't care. I was simply living my truth. This is who I am. Indigenous. Hip hop. All of it. You’ll hear flute and ambient sounds behind me—along with the spoken intro from my album The Messenger. Those words weren’t just lyrics. They were a declaration. A spiritual call to prepare ourselves. To stand strong. To know who the enemy is—and to know who we are with the Creator. “Our enemy does not have a physical form… He is helpless in front of the Creator… But he knows our weaknesses and uses them against us.” Every word I spoke in that intro—and every step I danced in Nassau Coliseum the next evening — was rooted in prayer, clarity, and representation. I wanted this moment to show that we don’t have to choose between tradition and modern day self-expression. The Creator knows our hearts and we are 100% allowed to show up fully — as we are. Representation no matter what. That’s always been the mission. #Litefoot #BeenAboutIt #TheMessenger #GrassDance #Indigenous #HipHop #NassauColiseum #Footnotes #Tradition #WalkInIt #Prayer #Culture #Warrior #Representation #Motivation #Inspiration #Indigeneity

Jews are not only indigenous to Israel—they are an indigenous People. Maintaining this connection to their ancestral land, identity, culture, and People as a nation is what establishes indigeneity. And the Jewish people are in fact many ways the success story of indigenous peoples, an empowerment model for other indigenous peoples throughout the world. #indigenous #israel #maori #jews
