Assuming everyone wants to be cured or “fixed.” → Many disabled people don’t want to be changed — they want to be accepted, supported, and the environment adapted. 9. Dismissing accommodations as “special treatment.” → Accommodations level the playing field. Calling them “special” reinforces stigma. 10. Only highlighting disability awareness during specific months. → Disabled people exist every day — not just during awareness campaigns. 💡 Impact > Intent. Infantilizing: treat (someone) as a child or in a way which denies their maturity in age or experience. . Since becoming a wheelchair user over 5 years ago, I have seen that the general public treats me… differently. I’m talked down to, not because of my now seated stature (hah), but because I am seen as having the mental capacity of a 12 year old. “Awwww cuties! Are you going to race?” “Woahhh speed racer! Look at you go!” “Good for you for leaving the house alone!” “You can drive?? How old are you?” All things that have been said to me as a 27 year old. I have been driving for a decade, have two AA degrees, am transferring to a university. I am a capable human being. . I am talked to like a 10 year old being sent to the grocery store with a list from mom and a twenty dollar bill. . I am sick of it and won’t stop speaking out about this to educate others that disabled people are so freaking capable. We overcome a lot and have to fight to get to where we are in life.
