➡️ The fontanelle always pulses because it sits over blood vessels and reflects the baby’s heartbeat. Since there’s no thick bone covering the area, you can often see or feel the rhythmic movement of blood ➡️ Fontanelle Red Flags While fontanelle movement is usually normal, here are some signs that need medical attention: 🚨Sunken fontanelle – Could indicate dehydration, especially if paired with dry mouth, fewer wet diapers, or lethargy. *mildly sunken fontanelle in the right light freaks parents out- but look at the whole picture! a hydrated, happy, well appearing baby is not dehydrated just bc you caught one pic of an appearance of sunken at just the right angle* 🚨 Bulging fontanelle when calm – If the fontanelle is tense and bulging when the baby is calm and upright, it may signal increased pressure in the brain from infection (like meningitis), or other serious conditions. 🚨 Excessively large or delayed closure– The anterior fontanelle typically closes between 12-18 months. If it stays open too long or seems abnormally large, it could indicate an underlying condition (talk to your ped). 🚨Hard, raised, or abnormally shaped– This could signal abnormal skull development (craniosynostosis) and should be evaluated. Most fontanelle concerns are rare, but they can be an important indicator of a baby’s health! When in doubt, always check with your pediatric provider. Sharing is caring! There is plenty of mango to go round for the orphaned orangutans in our care… but it can be more exciting to steal a bite when no one is looking! 🥭 Kiki and Roni have been keeping each other company since being handed over from captivity to our staff and BKSDA (government conservation agency). They may be small, but each day they learn new skills in the surrounding forest of Camp JL, Lamandau Wildlife Reserve, climbing a little higher and exploring a little further. Back in the safety of their shared sleeping enclosure, branches become toys and swings become games, providing a constant source of amusement for their carers! Each orangutan in our Soft-Release Programme has a unique personality. Despite their young age, it is wonderful to see these infants already beginning to show theirs.
