Full video on my YouTube channel! HUGE Multiple Collapses gone Wrong by the Cliff!! Close Call while Paragliding! Unaware of what’s coming next, I get a 2/3 asymmetric collapse that my wing handles surprisingly well. It reopens, only to be followed by a smaller collapse on the other side. Knowing how dangerous this strong sinking air is, I try to escape, but then… another big collapse: more than half the wing goes! Unable to stop the forward dive, I enter a deep spiral. I’ve done deep spirals before and I know how to exit them safely, so part of me is calm. But with the cliff nearby and the ground rushing up, I’m also seriously concerned. I mess up what I thought I had mastered. I don’t bleed enough energy, the wing pitches back, then shoots forward again, slightly asymmetrically. That’s when things really go south: the lines go slack and the wing fully collapses toward me, almost touching me. I pump the right brake to help it reopen, and eventually, the wing stabilizes with just a small cravatte. After a few failed brake pumps, I clear it with the stabilo line. This all happened on a solid XC day, flying a high EN B wing, after 60 km in the air, right as I entered a turbulent zone with strong sink. I managed to land safely in a nearby football field. Lesson learned: real-life emergencies can overwhelm “mastered” skills. Fly safe, attend SIV courses and keep practicing your skills. What would you have done differently?
