Today, I spoke during @mfa_sg ‘s Committee of Supply debate on how Singapore navigates an increasingly complex global environment. I emphasised that small states like Singapore have agency and can create strategic space by strengthening partnerships with like-minded countries. Over the past year, we upgraded several relationships and deepened cooperation with others. Also underscored that foreign policy begins at home and that our credibility abroad rests on Singaporeans’ unity, trust and confidence. #MFACOS2026

With ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, energy prices are likely to rise. In my COS speech, I asked about the carbon tax trajectory and how the lower bound of $50 per MtCO2 may affect businesses’ green transition plans. I also sought clarity on the impact of the USA’s withdrawal from international climate bodies on Singapore’s climate ambitions. In an increasingly turbulent world, we must stay disciplined and forward-looking. As a small nation, we need to confront climate risks head-on and be prepared to invest significantly to protect our coastlines, homes and businesses for future generations. #Singapore #Parliament

We are experiencing more erratic and extreme weather, from heavy rain to searing heat. These are warning signs that we must act now, even if rising sea levels seem like a problem of the future. Singapore needs a strong national adaptation plan, together with greater climate literacy and awareness across our community. We should also partner international climate research institutions and leverage advances in climate science to strengthen monitoring and forecasting, helping the public better prepare for local climate impacts. Long-term investment in climate resilience is essential to protect Singapore’s future. #Singapore #Parliament

Had a productive Tuesday this week engaging with colleagues and partners from the private sector to advance our advocacy and vision for the Philippines’ ASEAN chairship this year. Had a productive time at the 2026 International Energy Agency (IEA) Ministerial Meeting earlier this week. I spoke at the Opening Plenary and had an engaging discussion with IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol. I also met key industry leaders from Électricité de France (EDF) and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). These multilateral engagements are crucial as we chart the future of our energy landscape. Singapore remains committed to striking a pragmatic balance between security, affordability, and sustainability. On the sidelines of the meeting, I met with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and discussed ways to deepen Singapore-US energy cooperation. Our dialogue focused on the roles of natural gas and nuclear energy in underpinning energy security and system reliability. The US is a global leader in both areas. I look forward to welcoming Secretary Wright to Singapore in the near future.
