Why You Should Never Use Face ID or Fingerprint to Unlock Your Phone 🔒📱 With all the new tech out there—Face ID, thumbprint scanners, and ultra-fast unlocking—it’s easy to think you’re more secure. But when it comes to protecting yourself, especially during a stop, the old-school method is still the smartest: use a passcode. Here’s why:—People vs. Payne—Payne, 99 F. 4th 495 (9th Cir. 2024). In Payne, the Ninth Circuit held that forcibly grabbing a defendant’s thumb and using it to unlock a phone was not testimonial and did not violate the defendant’s Fifth Amendment rights They can even hold your phone up to your face to unlock it. Once that phone is open, boom—they’re in your digital life. You might think, “Well, I’ll just close my eyes or turn my phone off real quick.” But let’s be real—things move fast when you’re getting pulled over. You won’t always have the time to shut it down and trigger that passcode-only reset. And if your phone opens with Face ID or Touch ID? They’ve got access. Now here’s the key part: they can’t force you to say your passcode. Why? The Fifth Amendment. They can’t make you say anything that’s self-incriminating. That includes giving up your passcode. If you stick with just a passcode, your attorney has a fighting chance to challenge any search. Use Face ID or fingerprint, and the door’s wide open—literally. So forget the fancy features. Set your phone to unlock only with a passcode. Protect yourself! Stay smart. Stay silent. A PlayStation 5 on a 1980s CRT Television A modern PlayStation 5 was successfully run on a boom box–style CRT television from the 1980s, creating an unusual bridge between two completely different eras of technology. Despite being designed decades before digital consoles existed, the CRT was still able to display gameplay using an analog video signal converted from the PS5’s modern output. The setup works because many early televisions rely on simple signal timing rather than resolution or processing power. Once the digital signal is downscaled and converted, the CRT treats the image like any other video input. The result is a low-resolution, curved-screen display that still renders real-time gameplay, complete with motion, color, and responsiveness. The experiment highlights how backward-compatible analog display technology can be. While the image quality is far from modern standards, the fact that a next-generation console can function on a screen built over forty years ago shows how resilient early hardware design was — and how far gaming technology has evolved without fully abandoning its roots.
