India’s maritime heritage predates the age of steel ⚓️ Historical evidence from the Ajanta cave murals (5th century CE) highlights the tradition of stitched ships—vessels constructed without nails, using coir rope, coconut fibre and natural resin. #INSVKaundinya stands today as a living embodiment of this ancient Indian shipbuilding legacy. #IndianNavy #MaritimeHeritage #StitchedShip_India

The INSV Kaundinya, a full-scale reconstruction of a fifth-century Indian trading vessel, just embarked on its maiden voyage to Oman as a tribute to India’s rich maritime history.  The INSV Kaundinya is a nearly 65-foot-long, 21-foot-wide ship inspired by an ancient painting in the Ajanta Caves. The project began as a collaboration in July 2023 among the Indian Ministry of Culture, Indian Navy, and Hodi Innovations.  A team of master artisans from Kerala built the “stitched” ship. Rather than relying on nails, they stitched the wooden planks together with coconut fiber ropes (coir). To maintain historical accuracy, the artisans sealed the hull with all-natural resins and coconut oils as well as outfitted the ship with square sails instead of an engine.  Historian Sanjeev Sanyal played a crucial role. His research uncovered descriptions of ancient Indian ships primarily using hand-stitching instead of nails. This method reportedly prevents rusting, which plagued Roman and Chinese ships.  The INSV Kaundinya also pays homage to India’s seafaring past with other symbols: a bow sculpted with a Simha Yali, a lion guardian figure; sun designs on the sails; a Harappan stone anchor; and a mythical two-headed eagle from the Kadamba dynasty (present-day Karnataka) named Gandabherunda. The ship’s name references the first-century Indian mariner whom scholars believe sailed to the Mekong Delta and married Queen Soma to help establish the kingdom of Funan, or present-day Cambodia.  INSV Kaundinya set sail from Porbandar, Gujarat to Muscat, Oman on December 29 to the sounds of “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire. That route is also millennia old: historians believe Oman and India have been trading since at least the third millennium B.C. Oman even used the rupee until only 1970.
