I was expecting to see grapes during my time at a local vineyard, but little did I know I’d also be seeing quite a few insects. The Southern Yellowjacket workers (Vespula squamosa) really seemed to enjoy feeding on the grapes. The highlight of my trip was getting to handle the queen! Her body is much larger than the workers, due to her being the one is produces the eggs for the hive. Her colors are also slightly different as well. Despite feeding a sugary indulgences like fruits, these wasps are carnivorous and will feed on a variety of different insects and spiders. Yellowjackets have also been shown to feed on the carcasses of dead animals as well! When threatened, Southern Yellowjacket females will release alarm pheromones that trigger other females to fly out of the nest to attack the perceived threat.
