Inside Aardman: Wallace & Gromit and Friends opens at the Young V&A tomorrow. The exhibition brings the world of Aardman Animation to life in a way that feels clear, engaging and genuinely made for children. Coinciding with the studio’s 50th anniversary year, Inside Aardman explores the storytelling and craft that brings their familiar and fantastical worlds from the sketchbook to the screen. It does a really good job of showing how Aardman’s films are made without overcomplicating things. You move through the process from early sketches and story ideas to sets, lighting, sound and stop motion, with original models and behind the scenes material from favourites like Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Morph along the way. If you’re looking for a children’s exhibition in London that is interactive, creative and thoughtfully designed for families, this one is absolutely worth your time. It’s immersive from start to finish, encouraging children to draw, touch, experiment, and try their hand at stop motion rather than just look. Playful and clever, it’s clearly made with young visitors in mind while still being interesting for adults too. There are also clay modelling workshops for older children during the February half term, with more planned for future school holidays, which feels like a natural extension of what they explore in the exhibition itself. We were invited to a press preview of Inside Aardman: Wallace and Gromit and Friends at young_vam and it is the most interactive exhibition we have been to there so far. Ned was completely gripped. It is a brilliant behind the scenes look at how Aardman bring Wallace and Gromit, Morph, Shaun the Sheep, and Chicken Run to life, and there is so much for kids to do. Stop motion animation, a foley artist station, colouring, and hands on displays, plus little steps so smaller children can reach the activities. It opens today, 12 February, and runs until 15 November 2026, which makes it a perfect indoor plan for Half Term next week.
