It’s that time of the year again when jaundice A.K.A (YELLOW FEVER) sets in for grow out production. • Jaundice/yellow fever: originally called jaundice but commonly referred to as yellow fever because of the physical yellowish appearance on the body of the fish, this is mainly caused by dirty water, when the stock is allowed to remain in dirty water for a long time usually days without changing especially when the water has been used to feed the said fish initially, the fish therefore stands a high risk of contracting the said infection (caused by the bred bacteria in the dirty water). This sickness is highly dangerous and is capable of wiping out the entire production in matter of days. TREATMENT No 1 Quarantine the infected fish in a separate pond. • SALT BATH: this is the process whereby you make use of salt (common salt) to treat the affected fish. PROCEDURE • Drain the water completely • Flush the pond intensively to eradicate any dirt that might be in the pond • Block the outlet pipe and raise the water to foot level (just enough to cover the head of the fish) • Now add salt to the water in the pond by broadcasting method till it reflects in the water • Taste the water to confirm the salt (make sure it is salty) • Leave for 24hrs and repeat for 3 days. TREATMENT No 2 GINGER, GARLIC AND TUMERIC This is a treatment method where we combine ginger, garlic and turmeric to treat infections in catfish.
