As causas dessa iridescência são as seguintes: . Em Begonia: cloroplastos especiais, chamados de iridoplastos, possuem muitas camadas sobrepostas de tilacoides que refratam e refletem o comprimento de onda referente à cor azul. . Em Selaginella wildenowi: a cutícula possui muitas lamelas que também geram essa refração. . Em Microsorum thailandicum a celulose é organizada de forma helicoidal (espiral) nas paredes das células da epiderme. . As causas desse brilho em folhas já foram definidas, mas as funções ainda são apenas suposições, como maximizar a fotossíntese em matas com pouca luz disponível, repelir herbívoros e reduzir os efeitos nocivos do excesso de sol em algumas condições, como o surgimento de uma clareira em uma mata, quando uma árvore cai, além de favorecer a captação de luz pela face inferior (abaxial) das folhas. .
