Happy Monday everyone! Here's some beautiful clumps of iris (and other pretties too) at @joanns.iris.garden. She is such an inspiration to me and helped me have the courage to do some digging and dividing of my own so I can offer some of the cultivars I carry for others to have in their gardens. I'm so thankful for those of you who have supported me and cannot wait to see your new iris bloom in 2026! I still have a ton left and would love to find homes for them. Please send me a direct message if you would love some new beauties for your garden. What I have is also in my Iris4sale highlight. 😁 Video taken during my peak bloom visit in May!

In the very south of Azerbaijan, you'll find the Talish mountains. These are the home of a beautiful iris called Iris paradoxa f. choschab. They flower briefly in the short, moist spring just before the long, dry summer arrives. But when they flower, they steal the show with their large petals that range in colour from white with blue to yellow ochre. These small plants belong to the so-called Oncocyclus section of Iris. A group known to be rather tricky in cultivation. They require a strict dry season in summer and also easily rot in winters that are too moist. These are definitely not plants that you simply plant in your garden, but they are incredibly beautiful and worth the effort of growing them in pots to keep them dry when needed. Iris atropurpurea is endemic to coastal areas in Israel, where its critically endangered due to the destruction of its habitat for urbanisation and citric plantations. It’s a stunning early flowering species and I can’t wait every single year to enjoy this amazing sight in my garden. #iris #love #plants

SNIP SNIP ✂️Why and how we trim irises before transplanting: 🌱 In short, trimming encourages faster recovery, reduces mess, and makes handling easier. Newly transplanted rhizomes do not yet have a fully established root system, so their ability to supply nutrients to the leaves is limited. Cutting the foliage back by at least half (some gardeners prefer even more) lessens the demand placed on the developing roots by reducing the plant’s photosynthetic load. Lightly trimming the roots can also be beneficial, and once this is done, the irises are ready to plant. #dividingirises #beardediris #iris #sunshineirisnursery #hardyplants

Field Notes: August 27, 2025 Location: Mountain trails near Asturias, Spain Encounter Summary: While hiking through the lush mountains of Asturias with my friend, who eagerly hoped to see something extraordinary, our journey was almost over without spotting anything remarkable—until our descent. I noticed a vibrant insect resting on delicate lavender-colored flowers. Recognizing it as the elusive Floracoleoptera montana, or Mountain Bloom Beetle, I excitedly pointed it out. My friend approached with curiosity, carefully pointed towards it. In a moment, the beetle reacted by gradually unfurling its outer shell. What seemed initially just a brightly colored insect, swiftly transformed into a stunning bloom. Its golden-orange shell gracefully opened, revealing large, soft petals in delicate hues of pink and cream, forming a flower so convincing that even nearby pollinators were drawn toward it. Floracoleoptera montana is known for its remarkable camouflage, seamlessly blending among native wildflowers to evade predators. Its blooming reaction typically signals safety and acceptance toward gentle, non-threatening presences. My friend stood in awe, savoring this unexpected gift from nature, marking a memorable finale to our hike. . More at @oleg.pars .
