Irredentism

🇭🇺 Context: Germany vs. Hungary – Post-WWI Territorial Losses After World War I, Germany’s complaints about territorial losses under the Treaty of Versailles (1919) often dominate popular memory. Yet, compared to Hungary under the Treaty of Trianon (1920), Germany’s situation was far less drastic. While Germany lost around 13% of its territory and 10% of its population, Hungary was dismantled: it lost about two-thirds of its pre-war lands and nearly two-thirds of its population to neighboring states (Romania, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and Austria). For Hungarians, the dismemberment of the historic Kingdom of Hungary was a national trauma far deeper than the German case—fueling revisionist politics, irredentist dreams, and long-lasting instability in Central Europe. György Kurtág is turning 99! In this video from 2015, you can see the Hungarian composer with his wife Márta Kurtág – who sadly passed away in 2019 –, playing his transcription of the following Bach’s sonatina from the Actus tragicus cantata also known as: Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, BWV 106, meaning God’s time is the very best time. It’s one of his many transcriptions of Bach, Machaut, Purcell, Frescobaldi, etc. Born in 1926, he was at the crossroads of Hungarian and Romanian cultures: indeed, his Hungarian family was living in a region that was attributed to Romania after WW1, causing a surge in irredentism among the people of Hungarian descent living there. As he was speaking Romanian in school and Hungarian at home, Kurtág embraced that double influence, which is palpable in his use of folk music, just like his idol Bartók did. After years of studying the piano on and off since he was 5, Kurtág moved to Budapest at the age of 20 where he studied piano with Pál Kadosa and chamber music with Leó Weiner. The communist stranglehold on the arts in the post-WW2 era did not favor Kurtág’s output which was much influenced by 20th century Western music represented by the Second Viennese school, especially Anton Webern whom Kurtág revered to the point of copying the complete works bar after bar to understand it completely. After graduation from the Liszt Academy, he spent two crucial years (1957-58) in Paris where he studied with Messiaen, Milhaud, Deutsch: that was a liberation of sorts for him, but the true liberation would come from… psychoanalysis. He was struggling to compose something worthwhile, he lacked confidence: the analysis of Marianne Stein led him to understand that he was meant to compose shorter pieces, that would be his salvation as a composer.
