“Any man who would walk five miles through the snow, barefoot, just to return a library book so he could save three cents – that’s my kind of guy.” – Jack Benny Jack’s joke was that he was notoriously cheap. His most famous gag was on his radio show when, in his usual character as a comical miser, he’s confronted by a robber who says, “Your money or your life.” That’s followed by two to three minutes of dead silence, except for the audience which laughed with increasing volume as the silence continued. Finally the robber prodded Jack by saying, “Well?” to which Benny responded, “I’m thinking it over!” In reality, Jack Benny was a philanthropist giving his money and his time to a number of charitable causes. When he died in December 26, 1974 at age 80, his estate was worth $4 million dollars. His will arranged for a single long-stemmed red rose to be delivered to his widow, Mary Livingstone, every day for the rest of her life. Mary died eight and a half years later on June 30, 1983, at the age of 78. The Jack Benny Show with Nat King Cole. 1964.
