🐰🌵 Antelope jackrabbits are folivores (leaf-eaters), graminivores (grass-eaters) and succulent plant eaters (esp. cacti). They mainly eat fresh grass and other types of vegetation. During a drought they will eat cacti and shrubs, such as mesquite and creosote. They do not drink water directly, but get it from what they eat, especially cacti stems. #jackrabbits #weroamarizona #koldnews13 #arizona_hiking #arizona_landscapes arizonahiking azwildlife azstateparks capturearizona oh_arizona arizonahighways canon_photos igsouthwest ig_southwest tucson igers_tucson visittucson photooftheday conquerarizona fox10phoenix Beon12 explorearizona_ see_arizona abc15 iamazproud divine_deserts exploring_arizona whyilovewhereilive westbysouthwest tucsonnewsnow

Little friend at Desert View! Grand Canyon is home to several rabbit and hare species: the common Desert Cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii), the Mountain Cottontail (Sylvilagus nuttallii) at higher elevations, and the Black-tailed Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus). The black-tailed jackrabbit is the one you'll most often see in your headlights so please be cautious and let them cross safely if you're able! Anyone who has driven to Hualapai Hilltop especially knows what I'm talking about. These lagomorphs are found throughout the park’s diverse ecosystems, from the rim down to the canyon floor, often seen at dawn and dusk. #GrandCanyonWildlife

A Western Screech Owl took a nap in an old saguaro cactus skeleton as a Cottontail Rabbit came to my feet, unaware that the predator was watching. In the Arizona desert, a Western Screech Owl sharing space with a Desert Cottontail is a cool reminder of how tightly connected the food web is out here. While screech-owls mostly hunt insects, small rodents, and lizards, young cottontails could be taken occasionally—but adult rabbits are generally too large for them to handle.
