Photos recovered from the suspects’ phones showed ATM system screens, large amounts of cash, and images taken near bank ATMs. The suspects were arrested in Minnesota. Investigators recovered an electric scooter, electronic devices, keys, superglue, cash, and clothing tied to the crimes. Both men face federal charges of conspiracy to commit bank theft and bank theft. The investigation is ongoing.

Jackpotting involves criminals using malware and physical tampering to force ATMs to dispense cash without accessing customer accounts. The FBI says hundreds of incidents were reported last year, and it is urging local banks and credit unions to stay on high alert. Union Township investigators encountered jackpotting firsthand five months ago. Officials said they learned there was another attempt one month after that incident. The region has seen similar cases in recent years. Sharefax Credit Union was targeted in the fall of 2025, when three men were indicted for extracting cash from multiple ATMs. Because jackpotting attacks the ATM itself rather than a customer’s bank account, it can be difficult to detect using traditional fraud alerts. Union Township Police Chief Anthony Rees said criminals may test how quickly police respond. "How they respond and tamper with an ATM, and they might go back to their hiding spot and sit there and see how the police department’s response is. If the police department doesn’t respond, then they realize they were probably successful in avoiding setting off the alarms,” Rees said. Rees said departments increase patrols and surveillance after an incident. “And anytime we get an offense like this. Our department, and our surrounding departments, are made aware of it, and our patrol and our surveillance of our local financial institutions really step up a notch after something like that,” said Rees. Authorities stressed that jackpotting typically does not compromise personal banking information or individual customer funds because the target is the machine itself, not customer accounts. Police are asking the public to report suspicious activity around ATMs, especially late at night or at credit unions. Anyone who sees someone tampering with an ATM should call police immediately. If an ATM appears damaged, forced open, or otherwise suspicious, it should be reported right away.
