Ideally you wear one jade bangle until it breaks. That’s why you get one that fits you right and very hard to take off. So it’s a really long term commitment. I’ve seen the amas wear theirs during sleep, cooking, cleaning, etc and generally pretty durable as long as you don’t intentionally bash your jade. ✨Sonority in jadeite jade is often correlated with translucency, as seen here, but even translucent material might not ping if it is fractured — or treated with polymer-impregnation. . . Some gemologists may use “The Ping Test” to differentiate natural from treated jadeite jade. This is reliable in cases where the bangle has been verified as jadeite jade (typically by use of a refractometer) and is both translucent and unfractured. . . This is fairly common knowledge among jade bangle shoppers — which leads some customers to wonder “If my bangle doesn’t ping, does that mean it’s fake?” The answer is NO! . . Not all natural jadeite jade bangles will ping, as in cases where the bangle is opaque or fractured. Both of the bangles in this video have been tested and verified natural (meaning untreated) jadeite jade, but as you can see, only one of them has sonority. . . Translucency is caused by a smaller internal microstructure in jadeite jade, and is also correlated with toughness. This means that in many cases, all other things being equal, a translucent piece of jadeite jade will be harder to break than an opaque piece. . . **Side note: Dyed green quartz, the most common simulant of jadeite jade, also has sonority and often produces a ping when cut into a bangle. Therefore, The Ping Test by itself is not a conclusive test for determining if your jade is natural.**

How I’m prepping for Year of the Horse! Growing up the amas in Binondo would always wear their jade bangles since it is believed to offer good health, protection, wealth, and longevity. Once it breaks, it has absorbed the pai mia (misfortune) and has done its purpose.
