Our mini guide to Yogyakarta, Indonesia 🇮🇩🛕 SAVE for your next trip to Java / Indonesia! ⭐️ Instead of going straight to Bali we decided to explore Java and the city of Yogyakarta! This vibrant city has so many things to do and it quickly became one of our favorite cities in SEA. So here’s everything we did: STAY 🌿 Greenhost Boutique Hotel @greenhosthotel 🦋 Snooze Hostel Yogyakarta VISIT 🛕Pranbanam Temple ($25pp for foreigner ticket) 🪷 Borobudur Temple (book in advance to visit the upper structure — $25 pp) 🌎Sonobudoyo Museum 🌋Mt Merapi (especially if you have a cloudless day! You can’t hike since it’s active but the surrounding are is beautiful) TO EAT —Gudeg Bu is (traditional jackfruit dish) —Kesuma —Tempo Gelato —Kopi Klotok ⭐️ we rented a motorbike to get here and it was such a fun lunch experience! Our budget in East Java… 👇 🇬🇧. We spent 10 days in East Java, Indonesia. We spent €600 for two people, which is €30 per day per person! ✨ 🏠: Accommodation prices are quite low, but be cautious around Bromo as it’s touristy and hotels know this. 🥙: The food in East Java is very good and not expensive at all. 🛺: Transportation (public or private) can be quite pricey as major points of interest are touristy. Consider sharing costs. ✈️: From Bali, the average cost to get here is around €44 per person, making it relatively affordable. 🥾: For activities, there are few very expensive options, and nearly everything can be done for free (except renting a jeep at Bromo). If you have any questions, feel free to ask! ✅ ————————— 🇫🇷. On a passé 10 jours à East Java en Indonésie. On a dépensé 600€ pour deux personnes, soit 30€ par jour et par personne ! ✨ 🏠 : Il faut savoir que pour se loger, les prix sont peu élevés. Mais faites attention à Bromo car c’est touristique et les hôtels le savent. 🥙 : La nourriture à East Java est très bonne et ce n’est pas cher du tout. 🛺 : Les transports (publics ou privés) sont assez élevés les principaux points d’intérêts sont touristiques. Pensez donc à partager les frais. ✈️ : Depuis Bali, il faut compter en moyenne 44€ par personne pour venir ici. C’est donc relativement abordable. 🥾 : Pour les activités, il y a peu de choses très chères et quasiment tout peut se faire gratuitement (à part louer une jeep sur Bromo). East Java is incredible 🤯 We have never seen so many epic places in such a small part of island! Volcanos, craters, blue fire, waterfalls, viewpoints. Places which took our breath away. It was definitely the hardest trip of our travels! Waking up at midnight, traveling in the night, night hikes in very hard conditions, catching sunrises at the tops.. But we will never forget it! If somebody asks us if we would do it again, the answer is: 100% YES! It is not possible to skip East Java during your holiday in Bali. This trip will change your life! EAST JAVA FAMILY GUIDE 🇮🇩🌋 After chasing waterfalls, hiking volcanos, and wandering through otherworldly forests with our little adventurers, here’s our honest, no-filter breakdown of East Java’s most epic spots - what wowed us, what felt “meh,” and the hidden corners we’ll be dreaming of forever: 🌋 Bromo Crater – 9/10 Iconic, surreal, and not crowded if you go when all the jeep tours left. Volcanic noise, and that wild Martian landscape = unforgettable. 🌿 Coban Ciblungan – 5/10 Cute and calm, but didn’t quite wow us after seeing the big-name waterfalls. Nice for a quick cool-down stop. 🔥 Ijen Blue Fire – 7/10 A wild experience, but intense with kids. The blue flames are cool (literally and figuratively), but the crowds are real. Stunning crater lake at sunrise though! 🌊 Tumpak Sewu – 9/10 Jaw-dropping. Like a real-life fantasy. The hike down is adventurous and wet - not for toddlers - but for older kids? Epic waterfall magic. 🌳 De Djawatan Forest – 8/10 A little piece of Middle-earth in Java. Mossy trees, mystical vibes, and a great spot to slow down and let the kids roam. 🌾 Teras Semeru – 8/10 Rice fields with volcano views - yes, please! Peaceful, scenic, and a great place for a drone shot. 💦 Coban Sriti Waterfall – 6/10 Dramatic twin falls in a hidden canyon. Beautiful but hard to reach, especially with kids in tow. One for the adventure-loving families. Better only stick to the Panorama Viewpoint! 🌄 Seruni Viewpoint – 10/10 Hands down the best sunrise we’ve ever seen. Ultimate 1 Week Java, Indonesia Itinerary In August 2023 we were able to explore the island of Java in Indonesia. We started in Bali and took the ferry over and to Banyuwangi, and we ended the trip in Yogyakarta. You can do the trip in either direction, depends on your plans. We did a mix of travel that included scooter rentals, private drivers and trains. Itinerary Day 1: Bali Island to Banyuwangi in East Java Day 2: Ljen morning hike and drive to Tumpak Sewu Day 3: Explore waterfalls- Tumpak Sewu, Madakaripura and Coban Sriti, then drive to Probolinggo Day 4: Sunrise hike of Mount Bromo then transfer to Borobudur Day 5: Explore Borobudur temple Day 6: Yogyakarta and Prambanan temple Day 7: Yogyakarta and fly out Getting to Java from Bali From Bali Island it is quite easy to get to Java. You can get a Grab (taxi) from Canggu to the ferry for about 600,000 IDR and it takes about 3.5 hours. There is no public transportation for this route. The ferries leave every 30 minutes from the pier, so you do not need to prebook your ticket. The cost of the ferry is really cheap, 18,000 IDR. NOTE: you do need to buy your ferry ticket at a stall before the terminal. Your driver should know this, but you will also see little ticket stalls prior to the ferry. The ferry takes about 1.5hrs.
