Brussels, Belgium, has made its way onto my list of least favorite cities to visit. It presents a strange mix of modern-day metropolis set against medieval backdrops. Here are the reasons why Brussels doesn't do it for me: 1. Urban Sprawl - The city feels disjointed, with its modern buildings and historical sites clashing rather than blending seamlessly. 2. Traffic and Congestion - Navigating through Brussels can be a nightmare, with traffic congestion and confusing road layouts. The public transport system, while extensive, can be overwhelming and crowded, especially during peak hours. 3. Cleanliness - Some parts of the city are not well-maintained, and a lot of litter can be seen all over the place. That combined with the strong stench of urine is not my idea of a holiday destination. 4. Cost of Living - Brussels can be quite expensive, from accommodation to dining out. For a city that doesn't offer the same level of excitement or beauty as some of its neighbors, the high costs can feel unjustified. 5. Weather - The weather in Brussels is often gloomy and rainy, which can dampen the experience. The lack of sunshine and frequent showers make it difficult to fully enjoy outdoor attractions. 7. Safety Concerns - Brussels has higher crime rates, and safety is a concern, particularly at night. Pickpocketing is a common issue in crowded places like public transportation, markets, and tourist spots. While Brussels has its unique features and some noteworthy attractions, these aspects collectively make it a less appealing destination for me. Here is what you need to know before visiting Brussels as a first-timer: 1️⃣ Three languages, one city: Brussels is officially bilingual in French and Dutch, and German is spoken in parts of Belgium too. English is widely spoken especially in tourist areas, so you’ll be fine, but learning a simple “Bonjour” or “Merci” goes a long way. Locals notice and they love it. 2️⃣ Monday is basically a day off in Brussels: This one will catch you off guard. Many museums and restaurants in Brussels close on Mondays, and sometimes Tuesdays too. If your trip is culture and food focused, plan the bulk of your activities from Wednesday onwards for the most options. 3️⃣ Lunch is where you get the best deal 🍽️: Many Brussels restaurants offer lunch specials that serve the exact same quality food as dinner but at a much cheaper price. Want to eatt well without breaking the bank? Go all out at lunch and keep dinners simple. 4️⃣ Brussels is more walkable: The city centre is surprisingly small and most of it has been transformed into pedestrian-only streets. You genuinely don’t need a car or even public transport for most of your trip. Just comfortable shoes. 5️⃣ Brussels has some of the best free attractions in Europe: You don’t have to spend a fortune to have an amazing time in Brussels. Grand Place, Mont des Arts, and the Royal Palace gardens are all completely free to visit. The Parlamentarium, the European Parliament’s visitor centre is also free and genuinely one of the most interesting things to do in the city. Go to Brussels knowing this and I promise your trip will be unforgettable ❤️ Which of these are you saving for your trip? #travelcreator #exploreeurope #brussel #travelguide #Godisgood
