🎓 Jericho High School on Long Island is celebrating not one superstar student on graduation day, but 21 of them, with a record number of valedictorians earning the honor. "Being a valedictorian is such a surreal experience, because I've lived in Jericho my whole life, so being part of this nurturing and encouraging community has really taught me certain principles and values that I will use throughout my entire life," 17-year-old Liv Akiva told 1010 WINS. Akiva said that senior year has been her "most fulfilling" and came with "a lot of classes that have required studying and late-night projects and assignments." The school uses an unweighted GPA formula to determine the students who make it to the top spot, and this year's high-achievers smashed the school's previous record of 15 valedictorians by earning A-pluses in all classes throughout their high school career. Another student, 18-year-old Andrew Han, said he didn't have to study much and focused on in-school efforts to achieve his goal, while leaving time for extracurriculars. "I've always been the kind of kid who just paid attention in class, and reviews the night before or the morning of the test," Han said. "I never really put in much time studying, kind of just keeping up in class and understanding everything. and kind of putting a little work at home or going to extra helps in case I'm behind on something." He did, however, study hard for his SAT, which helped him get into Yale where he plans to study global affairs. When we started Jericho, we didn’t know what it would become. We started with 10 kids enrolled. That alone felt like everything. This August, we’ll have 18 kids enrolled 🤍 wow. Almost double from when we started 8months ago. We’re getting kids outside. We’re running camps. We’re building something that, honestly, we never imagined we’d build, and we wouldn’t trade a single moment of it.
