The last field goal of every player on their former team in the JJJ-centred Memphis-Utah deal. An organizational pivot by Zach Kleiman and the Grizzlies overseers, away from an era that was louder (and fun-er) than it was prosperous. A sort of Grit’n’Grind inheritance. A young core on the up and up who played for each other but were ultimately held back by off-court extracurriculars, untimely injuries, and linear development that tragically devolved into linear degradation. Love it or hate it, this was a logical shift. Knowing when to sell high often goes neglected in the minds of front office personnel as blind faith, false hope, and sentimentality can take hold and delay the inevitable. The Grizzlies effectively got 8 first round picks (counting Walter Clayton Jr.) plus a swing at rehabbing Taylor Hendricks’ value - whose defensive upside remains compelling. Coupling that with their hit rate on draft picks, they’ve set themselves up nicely. That being said, if Ty Jerome and Pippen Jr. had been on the court over the last 3 months, Memphis remains competitive in the West standings and I don’t think this trade comes to fruition. But untimely absences have been a common theme for this franchise since Ja’s initial 2nd round absence midway through the 2022 Warriors series. I figured Monday’s win vs Minnesota might reinvigorate some organizational confidence, but it is refreshing to see recency bias did not cloud their judgement. On the Jazz side, Keyonte’s breakout gave Danny Ainge reasonable confidence to put his thumb on the rebuilding scale. They’ll retain their pick this year by any means necessary and move forward with a multi-dimensional quartet - four proven and the other with boundless potential in Airious Bailey. The mid-term ceiling of the new-look Jazz may not be the promised land, but it’s about time Will Hardy had some schematic cards in his deck. Assuming their core can stay on the court in 2025-26, things in Salt Lake City get real interesting with the addition of one more perimeter stopper to ease the burden on their behemoth frontcourt.
