If there’s anything that grinds my gears, it’s the sentiment that you have to be “talented” to have a pretty, decorated journal. How many of you have never tried to add decor to your spreads, or given up after a couple of pages, because you thought yours don’t look “good enough”? You know that decorating your planner makes you happy, but you feel like you have to be born with a special superpower to be able to make it all look nice, and comparing your spreads to the ones you see online just makes you frustrated. Why don’t you have talent for this stuff?! Well, I have good news for you! Planner decorating is a skill. And a skill can be learned. Back when I started with bullet journaling, I would scroll through Tumblr looking at all the gorgeous spreads people were sharing, wondering why the hell do theirs look like a professional design project, while mine have the vibes of a first grader’s arts and crafts homework. I was already an artist back then, preparing my portfolio to get to an art college, so you’d think if anyone was born with “the talent”, it would be me. Yet most of my spreads looked like a potato. But I loved decorating my bujo, so I kept doing it every week. And eventually, I learned. I started to be able to tell how to make a harmonious spread that is a joy to look at and makes me happy to write my daily tasks in. The spreads you see in the second half of the video are my very first ones I ever did. I didn’t know anything about journal decorating. But I kept going, learned, and I have been doing it ever since! Don’t wait for things to be perfect, start now, and enjoy seeing how you’re getting better at it over time. And if starting still feels too overwhelming, you would like to experiment with decor more but feel like you have no clue how to make things look good and don’t want to waste time trying, that’s exactly why I share my printables on my Patreon! I always make sure all of the rewards of the month go together, so making a cohesive spread is the easiest thing in the world!
