here’s how i learned how to code 👩🏻‍💻👐🏼 even though this process can really be applied to learning anything new. at the start of the semester, i told myself i wanted to at least understand basic programming. you don’t need to know coding in biotech but i thought it’d be a useful skill to have to expand with. i’m still a beginner but now i can actually read code (on a basic level), use functions, and write simple programs. with the help of ai, there’s so much potential for coding beyond that. the best day to start was yesterday so start now ✨

What’s a servo motor? 🦾 A servo is a motor that rotates to a specific angle and holds that position. Unlike a regular DC motor that just spins, a servo uses feedback to move precisely where you tell it. In this build, I’m using an SG90 hobby servo. It rotates roughly from 0° to 180°+ depending on calibration and pulse range. The servo moves a “sun” model through the day: 0° = sunrise 180° = sunset The angle follows the time of day, and the RGB LED shifts color based on the servo angle, simulating daylight changes. That’s the core functionality up and running. 👌 Still plenty of bugs to iron out, plus a full wiring and hardware cleanup to do. I also need to fine-tune the servo angles in software—some are only a few degrees off but can't be physically adjusted with enough resolution on the spline. It’s satisfying seeing this finally move after sitting unfinished for years.
