Christian Dior’s legendary Junon gown (Fall/Winter 1949) — one of the most iconic couture dresses ever created. Inspired by Juno, the Roman goddess, the skirt was built from hundreds of ombré silk-tulle petals, layered like peacock feathers to create unreal movement and depth. Every petal was hand-shaped, hand-dyed and hand-beaded by Maison Rébé, while the bodice featured intricate sequin embroidery. This wasn’t just a dress. It was craftsmanship at the highest level of couture. The original masterpiece is now preserved at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was designed to be unforgettable.  🖤 The name is not random. Junon is the French for Juno - the Roman queen of the gods, famously associated with the peacock. And the skirt makes the reference obvious: layered, shimmering “petals” that read like peacock feathers turned into architecture.  ✂️ How it was built (the couture engineering) • A structured foundation (think hidden architecture) that holds the silhouette in place • A skirt constructed from 45 petals - each one hand-embroidered with iridescent sequins  • Materials recorded in museum documentation include silk tulle with sequin embroidery, silk gros de Tours, and horsehair stiffening (that “floating volume” is actually disciplined).  🖤 One of my favorite details: the embroidery brilliance behind Junon is credited to René Bégué (Rébé), one of the great embroiderers of his era. That tells you everything about the level of craftsmanship Dior was demanding in 1949.
