Daily Diary 242 What if I told you that one man systematized the Korean Idol model turning K-pop into a repeatable success story? That man is Lee Soo-man, the founder of SM Entertainment. He began his career as a singer in the 70s, but in the early 80s, he left the entertainment industry to pursue a degree in computer engineering in the U.S. While there, he witnessed the rise of MTV superstars like Michael Jackson. Inspired, he returned to Korea with a new vision, and in 1989 founded SM Entertainment, a company that would grow into one of the nationโs largest entertainment empires. SMโs early experiments produced some of K-popโs first generation stars, including H.O.T., S.E.S., Shinhwa, Fly to the Sky and soloist BoA. Iโve created a deep dive on each of these acts if you want to learn more, but the real breakthrough wasnโt just the music, it was the system behind them. Lee developed what he later called Culture Technology, a structured process of casting, training, producing, and marketing. This approach became the template that many agencies adapted and refined across the industry. Building on those first generation experiments, SM expanded globally in the 2000s with artists like BoA in Japan, and then groups such as TVXQ, Super Junior, Girlโs Generation, and SHINee. By this stage, the system had evolved into a powerful engine for exporting Korean Pop Culture worldwide. And hereโs the thing, this was only the beginning.
