𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝗜𝗦𝗡𝗧 𝗢𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗙𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗬𝗘𝗧 When you arrive somewhere and instantly realise you’re not meant to be there as a tourist. Mae Kampong is a quiet mountain village in Northern Thailand that still runs on local life, not visitor numbers. In an entire day here we saw maybe 2 or 3 other westerners. That’s it. No crowds. No tours. No souvenir nonsense. Just wooden houses clinging to the hillside, mist rolling through the valley, waterfalls running past cafés and locals going about their day like nothing has changed in decades. It feels real because it hasn’t been reshaped for outsiders. Even getting here puts most people off. We took a Grab from Chiang Mai which took about 90 minutes to reach the bottom of the mountain road. From there, normal cars can’t go up. You switch to a local 4 x 4 for the final 20 minutes up the mountain. The best part is it cost us around £2.30 return, which quietly keeps this place exactly how it is. 🚐 The cheapest way to reach Mae Kampong from Chiang Mai is the shared van from Warorot Market which costs 350 THB return and runs 4 times daily. Book in advance by messaging the Mae Kampong-SanKampang-Hot Springs van company directly on Facebook. Grab and Bolt drivers will take you there but almost never accept the return trip so you will be stranded at the top of a mountain with no phone signal and no options. 🏨 Mae Kampong has almost no accommodation visible on standard booking platforms. Most stays are family homestays booked directly with the village or through Airbnb. Hostelz compares the same dorm on Booking.com and Hostelworld side by side, saving you up to 23%, and the largest hostel database gives you the most complete picture of what budget options actually exist before you arrive and find nothing available. 🌄 The sunrise red truck from Kew Fin viewpoint costs 100 THB return and is arranged through your accommodation the night before. The truck leaves before dawn and you need to be at the meeting point on time because it does not wait. Bring a warm layer because at 1,506 meters above sea level it is significantly colder than Chiang Mai at night and most people are not dressed for it. ☕ Mae Kampong produces its own tea and coffee and the village has multiple cafes sitting directly over the stream with prices that reflect local rather than tourist economics. Loong Pud Pa Peng is the most famous and worth stopping at. The village gets crowded on weekends with Thai domestic tourists so arriving on a weekday morning before 9am gives you the experience the crowds are trying to have. ⛩️ Wat Khantha Pruksa is a 100-year-old Lanna temple with a small chapel sitting in the middle of the stream running through the village. It is one of only two temples in Chiang Mai province where the Ubosot sits in the water. Most visitors walk straight past it on the way to the cafes without realizing what it is.
