She borrowed the wedding dress from her gay male roommate. In a 2021 interview, k.d. said: “Back in those days, I really thought of myself as a performance artist, and so, you know, the name of the category was most promising female. I was making a statement on my commitment to the music and to the duty of being an artist. I took the pledge not to commercialize my music or not to capitalize in the wrong way on my career. This is the time of year when look back at highlights and meeting kd lang was certainly one of them. You never know when you meet an interview subject how it will go. Do they want to be there? Are they willing to answer questions candidly? Have they ever seen my work? With kd it was all a resounding yes. I can't believe that breakout star I watched in my twenties would have a connection with me. Still getting lots of positive reaction to the interview we did back in September in Edmonton.
