They Stole A Black Man's Name. "The Real McCoy, Elijah McCoy." The phrase "The Real McCoy" is widely attributed to the excellence of inventions by Elijah McCoy, a Black Canadian-American engineer who held over 50 patents. Despite his extensive training, McCoy faced systemic racism that frequently marginalized his contributions during his lifetime. The "Lubricating Cup": In 1872, McCoy patented an automatic lubricator for steam engines. Before this, trains had to stop frequently for manual oiling; McCoy’s invention allowed them to run continuously.
