A kettle is a large group of birds circling together on rising columns of warm air, called thermals. —————————————————— Kettling helps kites conserve energy by allowing them to soar with minimal wing-flapping, making long-distance travel much easier. Gathering in these large groups also provides safety in numbers, reducing the risk of predator attacks. Additionally, being together in kettles allows for social interaction and sharing information, which can be important in coordinating their upcoming migration. Ultimately, kettling is a crucial behavior that helps swallow-tailed kites successfully prepare for their long journey to South America.

Cold front is moving in. Today I learned the word "kettling."

It may not look like much, but I couldn’t stop watching the slow act of kettling, and occasional streaming which were both regenerating and inspiring. Though they are distant, and at first that was disappointing, so why couldn't I stop looking. I realized that was the beauty—having a minimal presence in the vast open coastal prairie, with the sea of green and sky of blue focusing on distant life and momentarily forgetting imagined emergencies. 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅Houston Area Eco-tourism — we took a day trip to Candy Cain Abshier Wildlife Management Area in Smith Point, Texas, about two hours east of Houston, for hawk counting and ecological tourism. The sky was filled with kettles of hawks, turkey vultures, and various other birds. Kettles refer to groups of hawks or other raptors riding thermals—rising columns of warm air—to gain altitude.
