SIDGWICKS META ETHICAL AXIOMS I’m sure you know of Bentham or Mills, but there's a lesser known guy from the same time who put forward a better argument for this stuff (or at least ive been convinced he has) is Henry Sedgwick Super generally Sedgwick posited that there are moral axioms that anyone (with a sufficient capacity to reason) can arrive to. In the same way anyone with the sufficient capacity to reason can arrive to conclusion of 1+1 equalling 2 without needing to prove it by putting one rock beside another rock and then counting the rocks, we can arrive to moral Truths. One axiom is that "no individuals interests are more important than any others". Singer was a Sedgwick fanboy and really like it (so much so that it changed his ethical position early on in his career). The further claim is that no evolutionary reason can account for us arriving to this moral axiom-that it's not a claim or position that can be arrived to because of an evolutionary or survivalist account. Now both of these dudes are more clever than me and have thought about morals and ethics for decades more than me but this further claim seems a bit weak. I think that evolution can plausibly explain or account for this axiom we arrive at by more than reason. And if it's merely plausible, then it's no longer axiomatic. Argument one: From an evolutionary standpoint, this preference arose because we evolved in close knit communities where everyone depended on each-other. So by holding this moral "axiom" you were in fact helping yourself survive, just indirectly. It was beneficial to treat others as equals to protect social cohesion and ourselves. Argument two: evolution is often responsible for emergent traits, properties or behaviours that don't hold a particular or intended use. Because after all evolution doesn't have a direction or preference and so long as a trait doesn't harm the organism it will stick around.
