So many of you weren’t here for this kitchen renovation, and a lot are surprised when I say this entire space was DIYed. We did all the work in here ourselves aside from some small plumbing and electrical that was outside of our comfort zone. We did this project in three months in the summer of 2023. It really pushed our limits at the time and forced us to expand our skills a lot! 1.5 years later we love this space just as much as the day we finished it, and wouldn’t change a single thing! Eww brother eww. My kitchen was UGLY. Different color walls, brown cabinets just awful. So I decided to paint them. The color I used for the cabinets is Greek Villa and the walls Shoji White both from @sherwinwilliams I added some shiplap to the island,dad installed the light fixture and we also put up some backsplash for a little razzle dazzle. We almost replaced everything. Instead, we chose to slow down. Our little 1950’s cape cod was built with these kitchen cabinets and something felt wrong about gutting them for new. There’s definitely imperfections, I mean they are 70+ years old 😮 ! And there’s definitely no ‘soft close’ here…. But they’re real, solid, quality wood with a lot of character. So we decided to refresh them instead. And I’m SO glad we did. It feels right for this home & this season. I’ve renovated two kitchens now, and this one confirmed something for me: good design is less about trends and more about how you move through a space every single day. These are the kitchen decisions I’d repeat every time-not because they’re flashy, but because they quietly make life easier & more beautiful. • Prioritizing natural light ☀️ • Choosing drawers over doors. Nothing gets shoved into the front-you see the entire space every time and place things back accordingly. • Placing dishes, flatware & other often used items right next to the dishwasher so unloading takes seconds. • A horizontal spice drawer by the stove so every label is visible at a glance. We had a vertical pull out spice cabinet at our last house and we had to crouch down every time. Never again! • A divided cutting board cabinet under the prep zone: no digging, no stacking • Four feet of clearance between the island. Has never felt too small, has never felt too big. • A microwave drawer that’s accessible but not at eye level. Kids love this too! • A tall, floor-to-ceiling cabinet instead of multiple uppers: LOVE this designer full floor to ceiling look. • A sink designed for real use: integrated shelf & drying rack, but also with the drain offset to one side so you can spray everything straight down without fighting the drain. • And yes, the grocery-unloading window. Not doable in every home, but if you can… it is SO incredibly helpful. Especially with those big Costco runs! None of these decisions were accidental. They came from living in a kitchen that almost worked-and learning what I didn’t want to repeat. If you’re renovating, saving for later, or just mentally designing your future kitchen, save this. These are the things I’d do again without hesitation.
