KLEENEX_ Hedi's Head (1978) Kleenex were a late-1970s all-female Swiss art-punk group from Zürich who brought a playful, jagged, and wildly inventive energy to the emerging post-punk landscape. They mixed sharp, minimal guitar lines, rubbery bass, and bursts of noise with vocals that swung between yelps, chants, and off-kilter melodies—more like a punk-dada performance than a conventional rock approach. Their aesthetic leaned heavily into DIY experimentation: raw, immediate, instinctive, and free from traditional musical rules. They became a standout in the European underground for their humor, originality, and refusal to conform to punk’s tougher, more confrontational image. Their music resonated with audiences who later saw them as a blueprint for boundary-pushing, feminist creativity. Kleenex, were a Swiss punk rock band formed in Zürich in 1978. The band experienced numerous line-up changes throughout their existence, with bassist Klaudia Schiff being the only constant member of the band over their entire history. Guitarist Marlene Marder joined the group shortly after their formation, and remained a member until their 1983 split. LiLiPUT’s final line-up consisted of Schiff, Marder, and lead vocalist Astrid Spirit, and it was in this incarnation that the band recorded their only full-length studio albums, Liliput (1982) and Some Songs (1983).

Punk is lionized (and romanticized) as the movement that broke down technical and musical barriers, and, in the process, barriers of entry. So, yeah, maybe “anyone can do it.” But what are two chords played over and over without spirit and spark? Kleenex/LiLiPUT was packed both to go with two chords – not to mention the messy charm and riotous accidents that occur when things are lost in translation. The all-female Swiss band mixed Swiss-German and English lyrics in songs that sound like pop abducted by punk – or maybe vice-versa. Initially named KLEENEX, it changed its moniker to  LiLiPUT after it was threatened with legal action by Kimberly-Clark (which owns the Kleenex trademark). 🎤Kleneex/LiLiPUT performs “Türk” in 1980. 🎸 Kleenex (later changed to LiLiPut) was an all-female band from Switzerland, formed in 1978 amidst the burgeoning punk movement in Europe and beyond. The band released several studio albums in the late '70s and the early '80s, before disbanding in 1983 as LiLiPUT. Kleenex’s stripped-down, raw, and in-your-face DIY music epitomized the sound of punk in its brief heyday, all the while surpassing punk’s simplistic endeavors and informing one of the many blueprints of post-punk. Their jagged, untamed, and thorny music, coupled with a tongue-in-cheek swagger, and anti-establishment fervor remains one of the coolest in rock ‘n’ roll history.
