When I started my PhD, one of my seniors gave me advice that changed how I survived academia. He told me: “I never think about research on Sundays. I like to play football.” At that time, it sounded strange. As an undergrad during my BSc and MSc projects, I was extremely ambitious. Chemistry always excited me. Even though I struggled academically, I loved being in the lab. But research comes with something nobody prepares you for, failures. A lot of failures. And when we don’t disconnect mentally (and sometimes physically) from the lab, especially on weekends, those failures slowly start affecting us. We begin to associate failed experiments with: our knowledge our capability our luck our intelligence our future as a researcher And that mindset quietly becomes a habit. When I started applying that advice from my first year of PhD — truly disconnecting on weekends unless absolutely necessary — something changed. Yes, there were deadlines. Yes, some weekends required synthesis or writing. But working weekends stopped being a way to prove productivity or impress my PI. And because of that, I focused better. I burned out less.
