So to be honest...some people might argue that this is a misinterpretation of a more general metaphorical Whinny-moor in a old funeral song by some 19th/20th c yorkshire folklorists localising it to a specific whinmoor... but its great regardless.. and it weirdly does fit in with much older medieval folklore of the dead travelling from the continent to Britain... #folklore #leeds #afterlife #yorkshire #englishfolklore

When we think of the Iron Age, it’s easy to picture a wild, primitive time. But stand on the Hill of Tara, and you’re standing in the centre of a seriously sophisticated society. In Episode 2, Margaret Brady from the OPW paints a brilliant picture of what this hill would have looked like; buzzing with activity, worship and trade. It’s a very different perspective of one of Meath’s most famous sites. Welcome back, one and all, to our next Folklore File! 🪶 I struggled through my ailments, for I was so weary, to bring you this story. Owd Jenny Greenteeth (who may have a knife?!) is a canal-dwelling witch lady who enjoys grabbing the ankles of unsuspecting children and dragging them into the murky depths. Initially, I thought this was very much a Lancashire tale. But I was proven wrong by the vast amount of people telling me that Jenny also haunted their waterways, from Liverpool, Yorkshire, Cheshire all the way up to some parts of Scotland! How does she do it?! Let me know if YOU had Jenny lurking in your canals?! 🐸 The full story, along with a list of sources, can be found on our website (link in bio). #jennygreenteeth#britishcanals#northernhistory#northernfolklore
