The best way to teach language to a toddler is a really engaging toy and modeling some very simple words or sounds. Babies speaking “gibberish” is actually a very important stage of language development called babbling. It usually begins around 4–6 months of age and becomes more complex between 7–12 months. During this stage, babies produce sounds like “ba-ba,” “da-da,” “ga-ga,” or long streams of mixed sounds that may seem meaningless to adults. However, scientists studying Linguistics and Developmental Psychology have found that this “gibberish” is actually the brain practicing the mechanics of speech. When babies babble, they are learning how to control their tongue, lips, vocal cords, and breathing to produce the sounds used in real language. Their brains are also analyzing the speech they hear around them and experimenting with similar sound patterns. Research shows that babies from different cultures initially produce very similar babbling sounds, but as they grow and listen to the language spoken around them, their babbling gradually begins to reflect the rhythm and sound patterns of their native language. Another fascinating fact is that babies often use intonation (the rise and fall of pitch) in their babbling long before they know actual words. For example, a baby might babble in a way that sounds like a question or an excited statement. This shows that they are not only learning individual sounds but also the musical patterns of communication. By the time babies reach around 12 months, their babbling starts transitioning into recognizable words, meaning all that “gibberish” was actually a critical rehearsal phase for real speech. This looks like I am doing less for my toddler. I am actually teaching him to communicate. As a pediatric SLP, I intentionally do not anticipate every need. I give just enough and then I pause. That pause creates a reason to communicate. More. Help. Open. Again. I stay close, responsive, and supportive. The goal is not frustration. The goal is showing my toddler that communication works. This is called creating communication opportunities and it is one of the simplest ways to support language at home without flashcards or pressure.
