First thing first, Speech therapist does more than making kids speak. Imitation skills are the foundation of speech and language development. Teach your child new words by modeling them! No… this doesn’t mean just by saying it and repeating it over and over until they say it. Chances are high that they will not and it will just lead to frustration on both ends. Here is what I mean when I say to model: Modeling is a strategy that we use in speech therapy to provide the child with an exact example of what we want them to say or do. Children will start to imitate what they see and hear us do, so be a good model for them! Voice and breath control is very important to make bigger sentence if child is rushing to finish the sentence. We were working on tongue movement using a little marshmallow fluff (because honestly… motivation matters 😂). Tongue control plays a big role in clear speech — it helps kids learn where and how to move their tongue to produce sounds accurately. But the real magic? Speech clarity doesn’t happen overnight—it’s a process! When we first started working on “Hello, baby (animal),” my goal was simply for this child to readily respond to requests to say words. Now, we’re refining their speech by targeting tongue tip elevation and bilabial lip closure for clearer sounds. ❗️Here’s the key: At first, we accept approximations so that kids feel successful. But over time, we shape their speech toward more precise targets. We can’t demand perfection right away, but we also can’t accept errors forever. It’s all about gradually raising expectations while keeping learning positive! In just 5 weeks, this child has made HUGE progress!
