If they could type, a strongly worded email would definitely be heading my way 😂 My ponies 🐴have made it clear they aren’t impressed with the service round here. Term time they get fed early, before I get the kids to their various places bright and early. Weekends and school holidays, it’s later because I like to have a bit more sleep but these two aren’t impressed as you can hear. I love that the animals have very clear personalities and can get their point across even without words (you should check out the ducks 🦆 who can tell when the feeder is out of layers pellets! 😂

PUFA free eggs 🥚 (almost) ! The local farmers and chicken breeders told me that I cannot produce eggs without “layers pellets” Layers pellets are basically what the food industry considers it to be a balance of vitamins and minerals compressed into a small pellet for chickens but of course they also contain: seeds, polyunsaturated fats and grains When I first got these hens their eggs tasted awful due their previous diets being so nutritionally poor and high in omega 3 and 6 fats Now my hens are more saturated, they basically eat what I eat and my left overs. I also give them sugar Even thought grass-fed beef fat and coconut oil are mostly safe they still have a 2-3% Pufa. This is why Ray Peat recommends eating sugar to help minimise the intake We have been brainwashed to think that chickens are only meant to eat pellets, seeds and grains but they are omnivores like us ! I find the chittering chatter of the chickens tucking into their hot mash very relaxing. I sit, take a few deep breathes and just watch them. They're content and so am I. The mash is just layers pellets with hot water added. Oh deat, it's no treats worming week! The girls are being wormed with layers pellets with Flubenvet. It's something I do Spring, Summer and Autumn.they will also get a spot of Ivermectin this week to help keep all those pesky parasites at bay. So basically they have to eat these pellets for a whole week so no treats as they will not be hungry enough to eat them. Now is the time to be planting potatoes, especially if you want new potatoes for Christmas or have problems with psyllid (just keep them covered or well mulched until the frosts have passed). Growing potatoes in pots or containers is pretty easy and is a great way to grow them if you don’t have much garden space. Alternate layers of straw and compost with some amendments (I’ve used comfrey, manure pellets and some organic fertiliser). Keep layering as the potatoes grow through, until you reach the top of the pot. You can grow them entirely in straw, or entirely in compost/garden soil, but I like a mix. I will also note that this is matured compost so I’m not worried about it being too rich/burning the potatoes. Happy spud growing!
